The feel

This resort is well-established and attuned to the needs of its guests and the local culture, which it weaves into the hotel itself. Built in 1991, it underwent significant refurbishment in 2023. Although it has been under several different brand names over the years, it has always remained under the same ownership. Many of the staff have been here since it opened and speak very highly of the owners and the way that all the staff are treated.

Guest quarters

With a mix of rooms, suites, and villas, the resort’s selling point is that many have direct access to the manicured gardens and the resort’s labyrinthine lagoons. The villas are set away from the central hotel, a short stroll from the hotel lobby. Here, guests have a private pool of their own in a verdant garden, mosquito repellent, and a covered seating area for morning coffee or dinner. The contemporary decor nods to Balinese crafts and has a nautical air, inspired by the resort’s lagoons. The large bedroom segues into a bright, airy bathroom with double sinks, a substantial bathtub, a separate shower, and an outdoor shower and massage area. Everything has been considered, even the bale comes complete sunscreen and mosquito repellent, while his-and-hers hats and a tote bag are provided for use at the resort.

Wellness factor

The experience of the therapists at the Lagoon Spa: some have been working at the hotel since it opened in the early Nineties, and clearly enjoy working here. The relaxing treatment rooms look out over the lagoon, and the Balinese massage is as soothing as it is efficient. Even for skeptics, the sound healing experience is transformative. After a chakra assessment, brass sound bowls are employed for their healing powers. Villa guests can enjoy this experience in their own space.

Family matters

The beachfront property is ideal for families, with seven pools and direct access to the pristine beach; it ticks all the boxes. Here, there’s an opportunity to experience Bali without leaving the resort, which is a boon for families: enjoying local culture without spending hours in traffic. The resort’s Young Explorers’ program brings Bali’s heritage to life through crafts, dance workshops, scavenger hunts, and storytelling. Children can enjoy their own pool while parents unwind by the lagoon pools or at Lagoon Spa.

Sustainability cred

The resort partners with the Scholars of Sustenance foundation, which provides free meals to thousands of underprivileged families and individuals around Bali. The hotel provided 4262 meals in 2025 alone. Plant-based dishes make dining more sustainable. In the guest rooms, plastic has been replaced with biodegradable containers. Water conservation is key, with showers set to produce nine liters of water per minute.

What else?

The team at The Laguna is very proud of both the hotel’s heritage and Balinese culture. Foodies should not miss the opportunity to join one of the chefs on a visit to Kedonganan Fish Market, followed by a hands-on Balinese cooking class and lunch prepared using hand-picked ingredients. Another recommended experience is the jamu ritual and Ramayana show at De Balé Lounge & Bar.
