While Singapore Changi Airport may be widely considered the world’s best and a destination in its own right, the Southeast Asian travel hub is not one to rest on its laurels. Terminal 2 has just emerged from an extensive three-and-a-half-year renovation and the results are astonishing. The newly expanded building now comes with plenty of nature-inspired design elements, from wall finishes that recall geological landforms to horticulture displays like green columns filled with plant life.
A brand-new centerpiece in Terminal 2’s Departure Hall is The Wonderfall, a 14-meter-high digital display that depicts a virtual waterfall cascading over boulders. Bookended by a vertical garden, the multimedia installation entertains passersby with the four-minute ‘Rhythms of Nature’ show every half hour, when the digital waterfall’s appearance adapts to piano music by Québécois composer Jean-Michel Blais.
Travelers catching a connecting flight at Changi will want to spend more time in T2’s departure transit area to explore the fantastical Dreamscape indoor garden. More than 20,000 plants drawn from 100 species are represented in the hanging displays of ferns and shrubs, while the mirror-like ponds reflect an LED “digital sky” whose colors change depending on the time of day. For an extra touch of realism, Dreamscape’s sound system relays the distinctive calls of birds, insects, and other critters found in Singapore. Families should also look out for the 2 Bears Hideout playground with its uniquely designed slides and climbable features modeled after honeycombs and beehives.

Also newly opened in the transit area is the two-story Lotte Duty Free Wines &amp; Spirits, where a robot bartender, Toni, has been deployed for the first time in an airport setting. On the upper level—dubbed The Forest of Li Bai after the famed Tang Dynasty poet—an LED video ceiling catches the attention of shoppers and visitors will get to sample up to 18 different whiskeys from a display wall.
Diners won’t only be treated to sweeping views of the apron at the Gourmet Garden; the high-ceilinged space is draped in garlands of luxuriant tropical foliage. Here, hungry travelers can look forward to international bites plus a selection of Singaporean favorites, be it satay, chendol, nasi lemak (coconut rice with several sides), or the city-state’s signature cocktail—the Singapore Sling.
The T2 expansion project has also improved the passenger experience in other ways. Changi Airport Group says it has nearly doubled the number of automated check-in kiosks and bag drop machines, and expanded the immigration halls with more self-operated lanes. A fully automated early baggage storage system was also installed as part of the revamp.
