Why stay?

The jaw-dropping vistas of the cityscape feature iconic local landmarks such as the Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Tower.

The neighborhood

The hotel’s attraction is in its convenient location: barely 15 minutes’ drive from Haneda Airport and a shorter distance from both Tokyo and Shinagawa railway stations. Set in the primarily residential Shibaura district, it puts guests an easy stroll away from a network of picturesque canals. Kyu-Shiba-rikyu Gardens, a beautiful landscaped park dating back to the Edo era, is also within reach.

The feel

Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout Fairmont Tokyo allow guests to make the most of the spectacular cityscape from sunrise to sunset, a colorful changing vista, any time of year. Contemporary furnishings inspired by Japanese heritage make this a beguiling proposition. Check-in is on the 35th floor, an enormous space peppered with lush greenery, opening onto expansive terraces with a city vista, from which it’s impossible to tire.

Guest quarters

The 217 rooms and suites are all designed according to the traditional Japanese concept of engawa, a conventional architectural hallway that serves as a bridge between the interior and exterior and snakes from door to bedroom in the guest rooms, offering an unhampered view of the urban landscape.

BAR Studio, the company behind the hotel’s interiors, has ensured the design is as livable as it is beautiful, incorporating elements of Japanese art, including complex paper sculptures in the elevators, kintsugi, and carvings. Accommodations range from 52 to 278 square meters, all located on the 36th to 42nd floors. Perfectly planned rooms make for a luxurious home-from-home, whether on a business trip or on vacation—a good-sized bathroom with double sinks, and ample space to hang clothes or towels is a boon in a city where space comes at a premium. The living area is as comfortable as it is stylish. Blackout blinds promise a perfect night’s sleep, but the intriguing twinkling of Tokyo at night is a sight that deserves not to be blocked out.

Food and drink

Guests will need to get their steps in if they are to enjoy the culinary delights at Fairmont Tokyo to the full. Kiln & Tonic on the 35th floor offers wood-fired pizzas and grilled seafood. In good weather, the outdoor terrace offers unforgettable views of Tokyo Tower. At Vue Mer, French and Japanese café culture come together in elegant afternoon teas and seasonal cocktails. It would not be Japan without sushi and teppanyaki, which can be savored at Migiwa and Totsuji.

Meanwhile, the Driftwood Bar and Grill focuses on Yoshoku cuisine (a style of Western-influenced cooking) and inventive cocktails, while Yoi to Yoi is the go-to for Japanese street food and highballs. Top of the list is Off Record, a secret listening bar that is harder to find than it is to leave (look for the trumpet). With an extensive vinyl collection, this is a nostalgic and memorable experience. An expert DJ curates a playlist from a short conversation with guests, ensuring that everyone feels as though they are in their own private bar.

Fairmont Gold guests (those with a certain level of loyalty privilege or who book particular rooms) can enjoy check-in at the Fairmont Gold Lounge and a bespoke à la carte breakfast, along with afternoon tea and a personal concierge.

Wellness factor

As you would expect from a spa in Japan, treatments are both expert and thorough. The Fairmont Spa and Health Club on the 35th floor offers therapies inspired by the destination, using the hotel’s signature oil and locally sourced products. Even those not keen on a workout will appreciate the views from the 24-hour gym or 20-meter indoor infinity pool, which features a lounge on the outdoor sundeck; all with more stunning views of the city.

Family matters

On the surface, this glamorous hotel doesn’t appear suited to sticky fingers and tiny feet, but that’s part of the discreet charm of Fairmont, where interconnecting or outer-connecting rooms make family stays easy. There’s even a specific turndown service for juniors where amenities are prepared according to the child’s age. Baby cribs, strollers, car seats, and highchairs are also available and babysitting services can be arranged. For petite palates, there’s a dedicated kids’ menu at both Kiln and Tonic as well as 24-hour in-room dining. Travel broadens the minds of even the tiniest guests, and even Migiwa and Totsuji offer sushi and teppanyaki kids’ menus. Children aged five and under dine free. When it comes to wellness, adult-accompanied children aged four and above are welcome in the pools.

Sustainability cred

The dining experience is curated to be made-to-order, with no waste. Carbon-conscious menus reduce emissions through thoughtful local ingredients, and only cage-free eggs make it to the plate. Rental bikes encourage guests to get around without leaving a carbon footprint. In Q1 of 2026, an AI-powered waste management system will enable real-time tracking and analysis.

What else?

The first Fairmont in Japan also has another first for any hotel I’ve visited: a Chief Happiness Officer of the four-legged kind. Serene, the Labrador Retriever, has her own kennel inside the hotel entrance, where you will find her reclining when she’s not stretched out on her custom-made bed or feasting on gourmet treats. While she doesn’t have her own Instagram account, she is the subject of most engagement. On a serious note, she serves as a symbol of the initiative to help Tier Heim KOKUA, an animal welfare organization founded in 2011. Through the hotel’s “One-tastic” stay package for guests traveling with dogs, 10 percent of proceeds are donated to the organization, helping provide care for animals rescued from neglect.
