Classic Japanese fast food done in a slower, more thoughtful style is Kamachiku’s unofficial claim to fame. Located in Tokyo&#8217;s nostalgic old-world neighborhood of Nezu, it’s a place for two things: thoughtful contemplation and excellent udon noodles. The popular restaurant incorporates a restored century-old brick warehouse on a charmingly ramshackle backstreet. This architectural heritage is juxtaposed with a floor-to-ceiling glass wall that faces a lush and beautifully maintained Japanese garden.
While there’s a wide array of side dishes, the udon is a make-it-your-own affair, with two bases to choose from: cold or hot noodles—made fresh daily and cut by hand—and broth to match. In a way, Nezu Kamachiku’s uncomplicated menu nurtures mindful eating and an appreciation for simplicity. Each udon serving comes with toppings, chopped scallions, tempura batter croutons, grated ginger, and shichimi-togarashi (seven spice).
