Since the launch of the first exhibition in Tokyo’s outlying Odaiba district in 2018, the immersive digital art installations by international art collective <a href="https://www.teamlab.art/e/tokyo/?DestinAsian">teamLab</a> have grown into a bona fide Instagram sensation. Blurring the boundaries between art and audience, teamLab’s light sculptures, augmented-reality video projections and mirror-clad maze rooms allow visitors to, quite literally, lose themselves in the room-spanning works.
The original location closed at the end of 2022, but that&#8217;s good news: since February 2024, the exhibition has taken over the <a href="https://www.teamlab.art/e/tokyo/?DestinAsian">Mori Building Digital Art Museum</a> in the basement of the Azabudai Hills complex, making it much easier to access from downtown. TeamLab used the downtime to develop a range of new installations, with new highlights including a “bubble universe” of a seemingly infinite sprawl of reflective baubles, and a digital flower field that interacts with the movements of the people that pass through the space. A free mobile application, downloadable via a QR code at the entrance, helps put the works into a philosophical context and enables guests to make their own creative contributions to some of the pieces. —Chris Schalkx
