Anchoring one of Tokyo’s newest precincts for shopping and entertainment—and directly connected to Takanawa Gateway Station on the JR Yamanote Line—Takanawa Gateway City Tokyo opened in 2025 as one of Japan’s largest mixed-use urban development projects.
Its main attraction is the NEWoMan Takanawa mall, which comprises the lower five floors of the complex as well as the Luftbaum sky garden on the 28th and 29th floors of the North Tower. (The shopping center can also be accessed from <a href="https://destinasian.com/tokyo-hotels-jw-marriott-tokyo">JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo</a>.)
At Luftbaum, visitors can wander through two main garden areas with more than 500 plant varieties: Sui no Niwa faces Mt. Fuji, while Yamabuki no Niwa overlooks Tokyo Bay and the Rainbow Bridge from its vantage point 150 meters above the ground.
Open until midnight, they afford arresting panoramas of the surrounding area. Restaurants and cafés are set among the greenery and terraces, serving food ranging from sushi and barbecued wagyu to Italian-inspired dishes and New York–style steaks.
Takanawa Gateway City Tokyo continues to evolve. In spring 2026, the cultural complex Mon Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives will debut, spanning six floors above ground and three below, with cross-disciplinary exhibitions blending art, science, technology, and traditional Japanese culture. — <a href="https://destinasian.com/contributor/louise-george-kittaka">Louise George Kittaka</a>
