Central Tokyo’s Shibuya district has long been defined by its concrete jungles and towers of gleaming steel, but fresh arrivals such as <a href="https://www.miyashita-park.tokyo?DestinAsian">Miyashita Park</a> have helped turn it a little greener. Taking over a former parking garage along the Yamanote Line’s railway tracks, this linear rooftop park has become a favorite hangout for local youngsters practicing their J-pop dance moves, or sharp-suited salarymen gathering for picnics during their lunch break.
But it’s more than just an urban oasis: at street level, long communal tables spill out from the old-time izakaya restaurants that make up Shibuya Yokocho, a lantern-lined indoor-outdoor food court where you can graze on everything from Hokkaido-style seafood bowls to soba noodles from Okinawa.
A mall occupies the floors above. Its boutique line-up covers the usual suspects such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton, but it’s the homegrown retail concepts you&#8217;ll want to seek out: Tokyo-based Hender Scheme specializes in smart sneakers and leather ware; Hightide from Kyushu sells stationery of every shape, size and color; while the Kapok Knot boutique turns natural fiber into fashion-forward bed blankets and down jackets. —Chris Schalkx
