Why stay?

Located in the leafiest and most desirable part of Singapore, Shangri-La Singapore is a study in contrasts. Set amid six hectares of calm tropical greenery yet steps from the bustle of Orchard Road, it has a relaxing resort feel for a place one would expect to be staunchly urban.

Opened in 1971, the property has remained relevant through thoughtful renovations tailored to both business and family stays across its three well-appointed towers. As one of the flagship properties of the Shangri-La group, service and comfort are top priorities and dialed to the nines.

The neighborhood

It’s easy to fall under the spell of the lush grounds and forget the city is just outside. Orchard Road’s glittering stretch of shopping and dining venues is a hop and a skip away. The location strikes gold in every direction: the UNESCO-listed Singapore Botanic Gardens, Dempsey dining district, Ion Orchard and Paragon malls are all in the vicinity.

The feel

Expect classic, understated elegance, warm tones, and touches of contemporary art that flow from the lobby to the rooms. As you walk into the hotel, a mesmerizing ceiling installation of a thousand leaves by Studio Sawada Design captures the movement of the wind. The lobby is dotted with six inconspicuous sculptures, titled Children Dabbling in the Water, by Seoul-based artist Yi Hwan Kwon. Outside, verdant greenery, cascading waterfalls, and koi ponds invite quiet wandering, while the Orchid—a seven-meter-tall open-air greenhouse—showcases vibrant orchid hybrids and more than 600 plants.

Guest quarters

With 792 rooms across three towers, a stay can be personalized to your purpose. Each tower offers a distinct mood ranging from the laid-back ease of the Garden Wing, the contemporary business sensibility of the Tower Wing, to the discreet luxury of the Valley Wing.

While the Valley Wing is tailored for dignitaries and leaders seeking privacy, the Garden Wing channels a refined resort feel with contoured bougainvillea-lined balconies. The Tower Wing features an earthy palette, cream furnishings, rattan, wood and leather details and minimalist artwork that anchors the rooms. Bathrooms include a marble bathtub, rain shower, and dual sinks. A concealed room divider affords privacy to traveling couples, and thoughtful touches like Dyson hairdryers, soft lighting, Janice Wong chocolates, and a Nespresso machine elevate the stay. The Horizon Lounge’s two contoured bay windows are a highlight: filled with bursts of orchids, plush cream sofas, and a handsome desk, they frame sweeping views of the city’s green canopies.

Food and drink

The Shangri-La impresses with its diverse culinary lineup. The Line offers a breakfast of abundance, from made-to-order laksa to freshly pressed kaya toast. At Waterfall, the Italian fare includes Piedmont’s vitello tonnato: ribbons of thinly sliced cold veal, served with a tuna cream and dotted with capers for a burst of acidity. Shang Palace, led by Hong Kong-trained chef Daniel Cheung, excels at Peking duck and traditional Cantonese delights like fish maw.

The Lobby Lounge brings the garden indoors, complete with a fern- and moss-filled basalt rock wall garden by Australian landscape designer Charlie Albone. The menu here delivers Southeast Asian hawker staples: bak kut teh, beef rendang, and Nyonya chicken curry. Later in the day, head to Origin Bar, where the inspired cocktails on the current menu, ‘POV- The way we see it’, explore flavors through a modern, experimental lens.

Wellness factor

A visit to Chi, The Spa is a must-do. Treatments are delivered by experienced therapists in nine serene, custom-built treatment rooms. The menu includes a deep tissue massage—a welcome reprieve for weary travelers—four-tea exfoliation, and moor mud wraps. Post treatment, tea, lemon-infused water, and dried fruits are served in an elegant spa lounge.

For the sporty, there are four tennis courts or the well-equipped gym with a wide-scope glass wall overlooking the pool area. As with all Shangri-La properties, there’s a large free-form pool, plenty of lounge chairs and a separate kids’ pool with slides.

Family matters

The Shang, as it’s affectionately known by locals, has always been well attuned to families. A designated floor in the Tower Wing offers family-oriented rooms and suites with playful decor. The hotel also houses an amply sized indoor and outdoor play space called Buds by Shangri-La, alongside a water play zone with whimsical splash pads.

Sustainability cred

Shangri-La Singapore has a wide range of green initiatives in place, from digital check-in processes to clear goals for waste management, and energy and water efficiency. Besides the installation of rooftop solar panels, the hotel’s commitment to environmental protection is clear inside the guest rooms, which come with Tetra Pak water bottles, bamboo toothbrushes, and refillable full-bottle bath amenities.

Book a room with access the Horizon Lounge, where a quieter breakfast experience, all-day refreshments, mini tarts, a cheese selection, and happy hour cocktails await. Located on the 24th floor, the lounge also offers wide-spanning views of the city.
