Bucha is a showcase for one family’s varied treasures. Rare antiques and a collection of hundreds of Buddhist amulets, worn with the belief that they bring good fortune and ward off negative energy, fill the premises. But beyond the art, what most people come here for is the food of Khun Wina Sriyaphong, who didn’t see herself staying home and tending a garden after running the family business for 30 years. With the help of her son Earl, Bucha became her retirement project, much to the delight of diners who regularly drop in for her personal twists on Southern Thai classics.
For the full experience of a classically composed Thai meal, you need something on the table from each part of the menu. Pick a salad like the one made of squid, squid ink, and roasted coconut; a spicy shrimp-paste dip with green mango; and a zippy soup like free-range chicken with turmeric.
