An inviting compound that is simultaneously a gallery, café, bar, shop, and almost everything in between, <a href="https://www.chinahouse.com.my/index-new.html?DestinAsian">ChinaHouse</a> is a George Town institution best known for its extravagant cakes, flip-flop-style relaxed atmosphere and tables that double up as scribble boards. Head over to the Victoria Street side of the prewar terrace houses for an entirely different treat: <a href="https://canteenchinahouse.wordpress.com/?DestinAsian">The Canteen</a> bar has live music gigs every night and a large selection of wines, which guests can take directly from fridges dotted throughout the space. Australian-born owner Narelle McMurtrie, who also runs Langkawi’s Bon Ton Resort, is a big fan of natural wines, and the menu follows suit, with drops including sparkling Tissot Cremant du Jura Rose—a small biodynamic vineyard east of Burgundy—and Lucy Margaux Vino Rosso from winemaker Anton Van Klopper in the Adelaide Hills. The live music ranges from high-octane bands like Acidic Bunch and Spunk Unit on weekends, to mellow jazz sounds from Ronald de’Leon Quintet and RJ &amp; Ravi on weekdays. —Leisa Tyler
