<h2><strong>Why stay?</strong></h2>
<p>A second act for one of Penang’s most celebrated heritage hotels, Cheong Fatt Tze &#8211; The Qing Suites breathes new life into a row of terrace houses originally built in 1904 as the servants’ quarters for the <a href="https://destinasian.com/penang-attractions-cheong-fatt-tze-blue-mansion" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Blue Mansion</a> across the street. This sensitively updated annex is now a calm, homey retreat that’s steeped in history yet attuned to modern life. Launched in December 2025 after five years of planning, design, and painstaking restoration work, it contains just 13 calm-inducing suites. Expect hearty breakfasts designed by a top local chef and an intimate spa focused on traditional Chinese medicine.</p>
<h2><strong>The neighborhood</strong></h2>
<p>A respectable distance from tourist magnets like Armenian Street, The Qing Suites enjoys a peaceful location in the buffer zone of <a href="https://destinasian.com/editorial/revisiting-george-town-penang" target="_blank" rel="noopener">George Town</a>’s UNESCO-listed historic core. Visitors from elsewhere in <a href="https://destinasian.com/travel-guide/malaysia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Malaysia</a> frequent the nearby Red Garden Food Paradise, a nighttime hawker center for classics like <em>char kway teow</em>, oyster omelet, and <em>apam balik</em> pancakes. Just around the corner on Muntri Street, there’s a diverse crop of restaurants and cafés as well as the Hainan Thean Hou Temple, whose intricate carvings date from the 1890s. For an immersion into local life, bustling Chowrasta Market is less than 10 minutes’ walk away.</p>

<h2><strong>The feel</strong></h2>
<p>The Qing Suites are cozy and introverted by design. Behind the indigo-washed facade, a subdued color palette is balanced with eclectic heritage details that draw on George Town’s melting-pot character: Italian-inspired arches meet Chinese frescoes and upcycled Indian furrow roof tiles. Restrained interiors balance plush yet unobtrusive furnishings with lime-plastered walls, terra-cotta tilework, and original timber beams and floorboards. Suites are organized around an inviting sun-dappled courtyard with dining tables and potted plants, but chances are you’ll rarely see other guests except at breakfast.</p>
<h2><strong>Guest quarters</strong></h2>
<p>Measuring at least 44 square meters, the 13 suites are spread across the compound’s two floors. Ground-level accommodations have private walled gardens, while the Terrace suites directly upstairs share a communal outdoor deck. On the opposite side of the courtyard, Signature Suites are equipped with double-glazed windows to keep out any street noise. All rooms feature custom furniture and artworks: think king beds, large-scale calligraphy from a <a href="https://destinasian.com/travel-guide/malaysia/kuala-lumpur" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kuala Lumpur</a>–based artist, monochromatic striped rugs, round mirrors, and a daybed. Espresso machines and Bluetooth speakers round out the in-room amenities. Meanwhile, spacious bathrooms come with a marble vanity counter and standalone tub, a salon-grade hair dryer by Singaporean brand Stryv, plus a complimentary herbal bath mixture from the spa.</p>
<h2><strong>Food and drink</strong></h2>
<p>As at the Blue Mansion, The Qing Suites’ culinary consultant is chef Su Kim Hock of one-Michelin-starred restaurant <a href="https://destinasian.com/penang-dining-au-jardin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Au Jardin</a>. Breakfast can either be enjoyed in-room or at The Qing Courtyard; you’ll be plied with fresh fruits, a handmade granola bar, warm artisanal bread, two kinds of butter, and ginger-and-orange marmalade from the owner’s wife. For mains, the herbal duck soup featuring garlic, goji berries, and angelica root is a standout; it comes with <em>mee sua</em> noodles and a meaty skin-on duck leg. Available from noon until 5:30 p.m., afternoon tea matches Chinese brews such as oolong and pu’er with scones, finger sandwiches, bite-size pastries, and mini Peranakan <em>kuih</em>. The Qing Bar anchors one end of the same courtyard, showcasing Chinese wines and liquors as well as a handful of Malaysian craft spirits. Garnished with a skewer of lychee, its Plum Duet cocktail blends Xifeng <em>baijiu</em> and sour plum syrup for a strong and slightly sweet flavor.</p>
<p>And there’s more places to choose from at the Blue Mansion, including the upstairs fine-dining restaurant Indigo and Cafe Mangga, a casual indoor-outdoor spot shaded by a majestic mango tree. (Try the latter’s <em>assam laksa</em>–inspired salad and the herb-rich rice dish <em>nasi ulam</em> with fried mackerel).</p>

<h2><strong>Wellness factor</strong></h2>
<p>Operated by a Kuala Lumpur–based traditional Chinese medicine clinic, <a href="https://www.virtuetcm.my/tcm/virtue-tcm-the-blue-mansion/?DestinAsian" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Virtue TCM at The Qing Suites</a> has four single treatment rooms and a reflexology space. Every session here begins with a one-on-one consultation and pulse diagnosis, ensuring that therapies are personalized. In my case, the suggested treatment to remove heatiness and rebalance my <em>qi</em> involved a combination of soothing <em>gua sha</em>, acupuncture with ultra-fine needles, and cupping. The TCM practitioner also shared advice on managing my diet and fluid intake after getting home. While there is no gym, guests at The Qing Suites have complimentary access to the Blue Mansion’s outdoor swimming pool.</p>
<h2><strong>Family matters</strong></h2>
<p>To help maintain its quiet atmosphere and emphasis on well-being, The Qing Suites requires guests to be aged 12 or over. Families with younger kids are welcome to stay across the street at the Blue Mansion.</p>
<h2><strong>Sustainability cred</strong></h2>
<p>Timber, brick, and tiles from the original building were reused as much as possible during the renovation. The indigo limewash applied on the facade and garden walls are not commercial paint but derived from powder, following the same production methods used at the turn of the 20th century. Suites come stocked with glass bottles of filtered water from Malaysian brand Acquapura and all-natural bath amenities in refillable pump bottles. The outlets overseen by chef Su Kim Hock use 100 percent local produce, with breakfasts ordered the night before to minimize waste. An on-site machine turns kitchen scraps into organic compost.</p>
<h2><strong>What else?</strong></h2>
<p>Beside the front desk, the Tranquility Tea Room displays traditional teaware and hosts guided tastings of Chinese brews. A compact gallery next door explains the history and restoration of the compound. The Qing Lounge upstairs is intended as a space for reflection, doubling as a private dining room for up to eight guests.</p>
<p>Over at the Blue Mansion, presenting your keycard gets you free access to guided tours of the building (these are conducted in English every weekday at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.). Also complimentary is an exclusive tour for in-house guests on Tuesdays and Sundays at 5 p.m., though advance booking is required.</p>
