A coastal enclave in Bali is transforming into a world-class destination for medical excellence and holistic wellness.

The Sanur Area of Bali has long been celebrated for its golden beaches, calm waters, and easy access to cultural attractions. Today, the Indonesian government envisions a new role for this southeastern corner of the island: as a hub of world-class health and wellness tourism, designed to drive economic transformation beyond leisure travel.
Since 2022, InJourney Hospitality—a subsidiary of state-owned aviation and tourism enterprise InJourney—has been developing the Sanur Special Economic Zone (SEZ) as Indonesia’s first integrated health and wellness tourism destination. Spanning 41.3 hectares, the zone is conceived as a holistic environment where cutting-edge healthcare, luxury wellness, and cultural experiences converge. The ambitious project is slated for full completion by 2027, with several landmark facilities already open.
WORLD-CLASS MEDICAL FACILITIES
A key milestone was the opening of Bali International Hospital (BIH) in June 2025. Spanning 67,465 square meters with 255 beds, BIH hosts Centers of Excellence in Cardiology, Oncology, Neurology, Gastroenterology &amp; Hepatology, and Orthopedics. The hospital’s expertise is strengthened through global partnerships with Sapporo Cardiovascular Clinic in Japan, Innoquest in Singapore, and Icon Cancer Centre, an Australian-based network of private cancer treatment centers.

Nearby, the local arm of German regenerative therapy center Alster Lake Clinic specializes in cutting-edge cell-based treatments and advanced medical services. The facility is set to become Indonesia’s pioneer in international-level cell therapy, complete with dedicated therapy units and a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)–compliant laboratory.
Also underway is The Solitaire, a four-story, 10,000-square-meter center uniting 15 world-renowned clinics in beauty, wellness, and reconstructive care. It will provide both inpatient and outpatient care, supported by state-of-the-art surgical suites and a curated network of global partners. Planned services include dental care, hair restoration, plastic surgery, telesurgery, and AI-driven medical innovations.
WELLNESS AND LIFESTYLE ENHANCEMENTS
The SEZ also emphasizes holistic well-being. Plans include a sports and commercial center, a five-star hotel, a luxury resort, and a five-hectare ethnobotanical garden showcasing Indonesia’s biodiversity—from ceremonial plants to herbs and spices. Designed as a healing landscape, the garden will host yoga, meditation, and cultural immersion programs.
Luxury stays are part of the vision, with a super-premium villa estate managed by Sofitel, alongside retail, dining, and lifestyle spaces—all scheduled for completion by 2027.

For visitors today, The Meru Sanur already offers a five-star beachfront wellness experience, from yoga and sound healing to cycling tours. The newly opened Taru Pramana Spa adds 12 treatment rooms (including four for couples) with therapies such as Balinese massage, botanical facials, and body rituals. Guests can also take part in melukat, a traditional Balinese purification ceremony offered exclusively through The Meru Sanur and Bali Beach Hotel. Using holy water from natural sources, Melukat cleanses the body, mind, and spirit, washing away impurities and restoring balance.
SUSTAINABILITY AND LOCAL EMPOWERMENT
Despite its international ambitions, the Sanur SEZ prioritizes sustainability and community. Once complete, it is expected to employ more than 18,375 people, with a strong focus on hiring locally.

The SEZ has adopted a low-emission policy, restricting gas-powered vehicles and ensuring transport is electric. A centralized wastewater treatment plant recycles water for landscaping, while a partnership with Magi Farm converts hotel food waste into organic fertilizer using black soldier fly larvae.
A VISION FOR THE FUTURE
By 2027, Sanur SEZ will stand as Indonesia’s flagship destination for medical and wellness tourism—integrating advanced healthcare, holistic well-being, cultural heritage, and sustainable practices. More than a hub for global visitors, it will also drive local growth, setting a new benchmark for how tourism and healthcare can thrive together.
