Families seeking out a rewarding yet relaxing vacation in the Indian Ocean can depend on Kurumba Maldives. Situated in the North Male Atoll, and a convenient 10-minute speedboat ride from Male International Airport, this verdant retreat debuted back in 1972 as the very first private-island resort in the Maldives. The recently renovated landmark property welcomes guests of all ages, and has evolved to fit the needs of discerning 21st-century travelers with its top-notch services and amenities.

Aside from Kurumba’s variety of accommodations—ranging from spacious Superior rooms and bungalows to two-level beachside pool villas intended for families—the diverse lineup of restaurants and bars speaks to a cosmopolitan flair. Vihamanaa, the all-day dining venue, dishes out international buffets that are sure to be hit with all the family, while hungry guests can tuck into pizza and Maldivian bites at the poolside Café. Thila restaurant and grill serves up ocean-fresh seafood and decadent desserts, and Hamakaze, located in a thatched-roof overwater pavilion, is the place for authentic Japanese teppanyaki. Mezze, kebabs, and other Middle Eastern specialties are must-tries at Al Qasr; mouth-watering dishes from both northern and southern India await at Mahal; while traditional Thai flavors take center stage at Khing Thai.

Grown-ups also have a trio of bars to choose from. Jutting out from a white-sand beach, Kandu is an open-air lounge for cocktails enjoyed with live music and DJ beats on a raised timber deck. Another ideal spot for sundowners is Athiri, which offers a toes-in-the-sand experience on the island’s western tip. Fez, a dedicated shisha lounge, comes alive after dark.

While guests at Kurumba can feast to their heart’s content, they will also have the chance to stay in shape thanks to a 24-hour fitness center stocked with a wide range of cardio and weight machines. There’s also a tennis court and multi-use court that can be used for a variety of sports. A professional tennis coach will be on hand for those who wish to improve their backswing or practice against a skilled opponent.

From windsurfing to parasailing and kneeboarding to riding on banana boats, activities on the water are even more enthralling. Families with older kids should try sailing aboard a catamaran and snorkeling Kurumba’s house reef, home to a colorful variety of fish, turtles, rays, and friendly sharks. Holidaymakers have even more reason to paddle out into the lagoon, as each guest room booked comes with 45 minutes of complimentary use of the resort’s kayaks.

Majaa Kids Club, whose name means “fun” in the local Dhivehi language, entertains guests aged 4–13 with a changing roster of daily activities, incorporating exciting games, arts-and-crafts sessions, and more with a Maldivian twist—think Dhivehi classes and drum and bodu beru dance lessons. Children will be able to mix and match outdoor sports with marine biology, in addition to face painting, puzzles, foosball, and movie screenings. Majaa Kids Club is also open to accompanied toddlers.

With its large accommodations and choice of restaurants and activities, Kurumba is an ideal base for a family holiday. Another hallmark is the warm Maldivian hospitality, with staff members doing all they can to make guests young and old feel welcome. Whether that’s booking family dinners, offering suggestions for the next day’s outing, or arranging a babysitter at Majaa Kids Club, they’ll help ensure a hassle-free vacation.
