Unlike many big-name brands who land in the city hoping to carve out a distinct silhouette in Hong Kong’s ever-changing skyline, The Murray, Hong Kong, a Niccolo Hotel, is something different—the sophisticated, one-Michelin-key property was built from what already existed, preserving the original blueprint of the Murray Building, a landmark governmental office that has stood at the prime Cotton Tree Drive address since 1969.

This pre-arranged partnership would later present as fortuitous, as the 26-storey building, which starkly stood out during its own time as the fresh new face of modernist architecture, was entirely compatible with the intricacies of a luxury hotel, namely in the original details put in place to optimize the statutory day-to-day life of Hong Kong’s top officials.

WHAT MAKES THE MURRAY, HONG KONG UNIQUE?

The architecture is impressive for both its aesthetic and practicality. These include the building’s iconic recessed windows, sharply angled for privacy and the ability to keep beaming streams of sunlight out so interiors remain cool, a considerate forethought that has propelled the property’s environmental standards today. For the 336 rooms and suites, which are some of the city’s largest, the modern interiors of contemporary finishes and elegant decor look out to expansive views of the city’s rising metropolis piercing through the lush canopies of the neighboring Hong Kong Park and Botanical Gardens. At certain angles, there might even be a fleeting glimpse of the property’s famed OVT (“Old and Valuable Tree”, as designated by the government)—a rare, non-native species of Cassia Javanica tree that has stood witness to the property’s historic chapters.

The looming ground-floor arches, too, are vestiges of a storied past, which can be explored with a guided historic tour for staying guests. Once hidden away from prying eyes, the magnificent 11.5-meter structural details were dramatically opened up by London-based architects Foster + Partners to connect the property to the city. Surrounding spaces, used previously as boundaries around the building, are repaved as manicured gardens and peaceful pathways, peppered with the occasional art piece, which has become a defining feature of the property.

The Murray, Hong Kong’s extremely well-placed location in the heart of the city is within walking distance to the bustling neighborhoods of Central and Admiralty, bordered by iconic sights, including The Peak Tram, which scales the island’s hilly terrain to one of the city’s most iconic viewing points. From a day of exploring, a visit to Wellness at The Murray will demonstrate just how restorative a calming moment in this urban sanctuary can be.

WHAT DINING CONCEPTS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE MURRAY, HONG KONG?

Inside, outstanding concepts draw upon global flavors both far and wide. Popinjays, slotted at the property’s rooftop, serves bright Italian fare, and is especially stunning on a balmy summer afternoon; while MIAN, the hotel’s flagship Chinese restaurant, represents the multi-layered complexities of China’s eight great cuisines. During the day, modern French bistro fare can be enjoyed at The Tai Pan, while evenings are heralded with well-shaken cocktails at Murray Lane as a delightful way to wind down. For something truly unique, 7 Paintings, a newly introduced culinary show, brings together art and fine dining in an immersive seven-course experience.

Nestled between the elegant arches is the Garden Lounge, a distinctive social space for a gentler pace of enjoyment, which, considering the hotel’s proximity to the rumbling highway, remains quietly secluded and serene. Much like the rest of the space, is nestled in a private nook of its very own.
