This chic contemporary boutique and gallery celebrates the uniqueness of Japanese textiles. Hosoo, originally a kimono tailoring company established in 1688 for the Imperial Household, now works toward protecting Kyoto’s Nishijin-ori silk-weaving tradition while bringing the ancient craft boldly into the future. The first floor showcases an innovative collection of lifestyle goods by the family-owned brand: think cushions and pouch bags, indoor footwear, and sleek armchairs, all painstakingly made using the fine fabrics and sophisticated techniques Hosoo is known for. Adjacent is the lounge, where visitors can indulge in tea and macarons inspired by kimono culture. Upstairs, a dimly lit gallery hosts changing exhibitions that examine the art of dyeing and weaving from various perspectives, rethinking Nishijin-ori textiles with a 21st-century approach. The by-appointment-only third floor houses a kimono and obi sash showroom featuring 7,000 exquisite Hosoo garments, including creations by the country’s top kimono artisans. —Bryan Eastlake
