Like many repurposed hundred-year-old buildings, The Godown has seen many incarnations, including a warehouse (hence the name) and cabaret dance hall, before it opened as an art center in 2011. Even the design of the modern extension—orchestrated by Singaporean firm Linghao Architects—is a work of art, with a silvery metal-paneled facade that peels back to reveal glimpses of artwork and let breezes in. At the main hall, the red-brick walls of the heritage structure come matched with newer timber floors and a mezzanine; showcases held between the original building and the three-story annex have previously incorporated video art and site-specific installations. The Godown also hosts events like basket weaving workshops and glow-in-the-dark painting sessions, as well as pop-up art markets featuring artisanal brands from Malaysia and Singapore.
