The neighborhood

A newly established resort bordering on pristine sands, the hotel is a few minutes by car to Lagoi shopping mall; there’s also the opportunity through the hotel to enjoy cultural insights such as learning Bahasa or taking a tour to the nearby market. The natural beach, safe sea and nearby deserted islands make this a relaxing getaway. There’s really no need to leave the hotel!

The feel

As in all Indigo hotels, the property is informed by the locale. Ship’s rigging and subtle map designs are nods to the pirate stories and trading history of the region, with hints of yellow and green as a reference to the many mosques in the area. Hotel Indigo Bintan Lagoi Beach is expansive, giving guests room to explore in a property where nature can be enjoyed alongside modern day comforts. At night the sea is lit from lights nestled in the palm trees, allowing guests to enjoy both the sight and sound of the waves. Think international beach club vibes with food to match. Nice touches include a refreshing cold towel on arrival and a welcome drink of pandan, honey and fermented dates; inspired by a drink said to be enjoyed by Indonesian royalty.

Guest quarters

All rooms (with the exception of the suites which have their own private pools) have views of the sea. The hotel is built so that each room enjoys an unobstructed view. Comfortably appointed, each is decorated with rattan furniture and copper lighting, a nod to the location’s shipping heritage. From robes to snacks every guest need has been anticipated. Some rooms feature a large oval bath to soak in the scenery while all feature a power shower and toiletries from Balinese company Sensatia. A spacious balcony with comfortable seating provides extra space from which to enjoy the beach views, while sipping a freshly brewed coffee. Suites have a large bathroom with dual sinks and a comfortable sitting area, the larger suites feature all of these – and a dining space too.

Food and drink

Guests can enjoy a thoughtful menu carefully executed, from local favorites to international dishes. The Sugarbeats beach club offers several dining options from the Ocean Kitchen to the Tiki Bar, and Stix Satay Bar. Start the day with a freshly pressed juice; or eggs prepared multi ways from the a la carte menu. A carefully curated buffet, housed in its own room, opens up to a variety of dishes to cater for all tastes from hot local options to pastries or hummus and crudites. Lunch at Ocean Market can be as quick or languorous as time allows, from light options such as watermelon gazpacho or salads to seriously delicious Bebek Betutu: Balinese style duck bathed in spices and served with sambal and mixed vegetables. Dinner can be enjoyed at the same location (different menu) or at Stix where guests sit at a high counter surrounding the grill with a choice of skewers freshly cooked to order. Like all dining options here, it’s the chance to make the most of fresh local produce, the squid with garlic and ginger paste and XO sauce being the showstopper. Rounding off the meal a complementary dessert of grilled honey pineapple or sticky date pudding skewers take the theme to a sweet conclusion.

Wellness factor

A gym, built in the grounds, is open 24 hours for those that love to work out. Even the running machines offer a view of the waves. Two sizeable swimming pools border the pristine beach. The main pool features in-water sofas, cabanas (with built-in call buttons for ordering drinks, in case moving to the bar is to arduous) and individual loungers with their own shades. With plenty of seating, designed with privacy in mind, there are plenty of vantage points from which to enjoy the pool, and the waves. Any beach break is not complete without a relaxing spa treatment or two. The Sunjivva spa at the next door hotel (same owner) is just a few minutes walk away (or transport can be provided) with excellent treatments that reputedly encourage guests to travel across the island to enjoy. The urut traditional Malay massage is just one of a choice of five massages. The skilled therapist uses thumb and palm movements in a deeply relaxing massage that manages to calm and rejuvenate at the same time. A wellness facility offering treatments such as cryotherapy is on the cards for Hotel Indigo later this year.

Family matters

Targeted at couples and groups you won’t find kids clubs or activities for children here, although there is a kids menu for smaller guests.

Sustainability cred

The hotel has a sustainable glass water bottling plant, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to single-use plastic bottled water. The purified water meets World Health Organization (WHO) standards while significantly reducing single-use plastic waste and lowering the hotel’s carbon footprint. The hotel also works with locally based Seven Clean Seas, an ocean impact organization, to collect plastic waste. Plastic bottle tops are also repurposed into coasters and used at the hotel’s Tiki Bar, showcasing a commitment to sustainability which is integral to the property.

Many had to leave Bintan in COVID to find work across the world and can now come home to work with an international brand on their doorstep.
