Luxury travel inspiration from the Asia-Pacific region

The centerpiece of the West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong’s globally minded museum of visual culture is an austere waterfront monolith by Swiss architecture firm Herzog &amp; de Meuron. Contributions by private collector Uli Sigg (also from Switzerland), who has amassed 1,510 works spanning four decades of contemporary Chinese art, make up part of the institution’s impressive holdings. Among them are pieces that likely wouldn’t be shown across the border: a previous exhibition displayed provocative photographs by Beijing East Village, an avant-garde community of performance artists active in the early 1990s, and Ai Weiwei’s quietly subversive installation Whitewash. Downstairs, special commissions from Yayoi Kusama include Death of Nerves, which adorns a central light well, as well as the signature mirrored space Dots Obsession—Aspiring to Heaven’s Love. Don’t miss ongoing showcases like “Things, Spaces, Interactions,” a fascinating look at the evolution of design and architecture in Asia over the past 70 years. —James Louie
