<p><em>Once a sleepy fishing village, the vibrant southern Sri Lankan surf town Ahangama is now the hub of everything artsy, edgy, and creative. Here are six Ahangama-based boutiques and brands that honor the island life in cool, contemporary ways.</em></p>

<p>Originally launched as a line of all-natural botanical cosmetics, Secrets of the Sun expanded into a concept store last year, working closely with slow-fashion labels, jewelers, and local artisans. With its pastel-blue walls, potted palms, and a thatch-shaded veranda, the boutique on busy Galle Road stands as a tribute to this sun-kissed island. Inside, gold-hued racks carry everything easy, breezy, and beachy: shimmering shea butter body oils, crochet tops, honey-colored beach wraps, and batik maxi dresses.<br />

<h3><strong><a href="https://www.oliveyu.com/?DestinAsian">Olive Yu</a></strong></h3>
<p>Traditional Sri Lankan craftsmanship meets modern design at this oceanfront boutique co-founded by interior architecture graduate Kate Becker. While it’s filled with resort wear, silk handlooms, and ceramics, jewelry is the main focus. Each stylish silver or gold piece—handcrafted on-site by a team of talented local jewelers—is accented by natural gemstones (such as sapphires, emeralds, and amethysts) and draws inspiration from the surroundings and the local way of life: think tropical jungles, artists’ palettes, vibrant sarees, and crashing ocean waves. The shop also hosts a series of small-group silver and gold jewelry workshops.<br />

<p>After moving to Sri Lanka in 2017, yoga teacher Evy Ferraro started Mukti as a small business with just one tailor. Fast forward to 2025, the studio is now one of the town’s go-to destinations for pure linen and hand-loomed cotton garments. Housed in a chic, glass-fronted space with polished concrete floors, the shop sources its clothes from a fair-trade factory run by a mother-and-daughter duo. Expect swimwear in earthy browns, gold-plated half-moon pendants, coconut oil conditioners, strappy maxis, and reusable period kits—part of Mukti’s Free Flow initiative, which distributes sanitary products to schools and midwife centers across Sri Lanka.<br />

<p>Sri Lanka doesn’t really have a thrift culture—or at least not until now. Aiming to make secondhand fashion trendy and accessible, Cool to be Kind occupies a spot off the main road in Kumbalgama, a village known for its artisanal pottery, just a 10-minute drive south of Ahangama. The clean-lined shop is filled with what the brand calls “head-to-toe secondhand outfits,” featuring preloved sunglasses, beach totes made from upcycled strapping bands, vintage T-shirts, and hand-embroidered hats. New stock arrives weekly, and if you have something to donate, simply drop it in the designated basket. <p>Shortly after Australians Phoebe Taylor and Seddy Di Francesco relocated to southern Sri Lanka in 2015 in search of a slower life, they got the idea of creating an intimate, boho retreat. Two years later, The Kip opened near the coast in a restored old colonial villa enveloped in the tropical foliage. While mainly a place to rest and eat—the garden café serves an organic seasonal menu—it’s worth a visit alone for the in-house boutique the owners unveiled last January. <h6><strong><a href="https://daydreamclothing.store/?DestinAsian" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Daydream</a></strong></h6>
<p>This Colombo-based daily-wear label was born out of the passion to design a laid-back yet stylish wardrobe that is light, fresh, and comfy in the balmy Sri Lankan afternoons. Daydream sources pure linens and cotton, turning them into garments like breathable, lounge-friendly shorts, minimalist crop tops, and oversize graphic T-shirts with surf and turtle prints. The small outlet in Ahangama stocks a range of staples that are as practical as they are visually appealing, including unisex tees in earthy tones of marmalade, ginger, and moss green. The accessories are equally beautiful, with maroon corduroy caps and bucket hats featuring embroidered palm motifs.<br />
