With the debut of its first upscale lodge, north-central Nepal’s Manang Valley is no longer just for hardcore trekkers.

Twitching its thick, spotted tail, the snow leopard turns and sniffs warily at the wind. Its fur shimmers in the first light of a Himalayan dawn as it moves closer, pale green eyes alert, breath misting the chill mountain air. Then, marking its territory with a spray of urine, the big cat vanishes as suddenly as it appeared.
After trekking for half a day across the scrubby slopes of <a href="https://destinasian.com/travel-guide/nepal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nepal</a>’s upper Manang Valley, it’s a thrilling sight—even if I’m not seeing it with my own eyes. Instead, I’m huddled over a camera trap with Tashi Ghale, scrolling through footage captured on this craggy ridge just days earlier. I catch myself holding my breath nonetheless.
A self-taught field biologist and wildlife photographer from the town of Manang, Ghale collects data for the Third Pole Conservancy, a Nepali nonprofit that conducts habitat studies and community outreach in the Annapurna region. Having earned a reputation as a “snow leopard whisperer” from his numerous sightings of the elusive animal over the past two decades, he is also credited with documenting Pallas’s cat—a fluffy if ferocious feline about the size of a house cat—in the Manang area, as well as capturing the first local images of Himalayan wolves in over 40 years.
That we don’t spot any snow leopards on our morning trek is no great surprise; Ghale reckons there are only five or six per 100 square kilometers. Still, as we pick our way through tangles of wild thyme and spiny sea buckthorn, we encounter numerous signs of their recent presence: pugmarks, scat, and the clean-picked bones of bharal, or blue sheep—the snow leopard’s primary prey. Adjusting his camouflage baseball cap, Ghale points skyward to where a bearded vulture circles in the thermals. “Could mean a snow leopard is around,” he suggests. We don’t get the chance to find out. A late-winter snow flurry signals it’s time to turn back.
Our outing is the first of many memorable moments during my time at MLN Manang. Opened last summer on the outskirts of the little village of Bhraka, the 14-room property is the latest addition to the <a href="https://mountainlodgesofnepal.com/?DestinAsian" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mountain Lodges of Nepal</a> portfolio, joining a network of more than a dozen premium trekking lodges across the Everest and Annapurna regions. In an area where accommodations have traditionally catered to thrifty hikers, MLN Manang raises the bar by several notches, offering comfortably appointed rooms, turndown service, attentive staff, and unfussy yet satisfying food.

“To be able to create this quality of concept here is a big achievement—not just for us, but the whole valley,” says Namgyal Sherpa, CEO of the family-run hospitality group that operates Mountain Lodges of Nepal. We’d helicoptered in the day before from Pokhara with Jason Friedman, a Bangkok-based hospitality consultant who has helped Sherpa elevate his company’s accommodation offerings, including the development of the upmarket <a href="https://destinasian.com/editorial/himalayan-dreaming-with-shinta-mani-mustang" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Shinta Mani hotel</a> in neighboring Mustang.
“Bringing luxury to remote places like Manang isn’t just about creating amazing experiences for guests—it’s also about showing local communities what’s possible,” Friedman tells me. “When quality rises, confidence grows, and everyone shares in the prosperity.”
The lodge already feels as though it has shifted the center of gravity in this part of the valley. The last major settlement before the high mountain pass of Thorong La, nearby Manang—set at 3,500 meters—has for decades been a key stop on the popular Annapurna Circuit trekking route. Small hotels and guesthouses have sprouted up accordingly, alongside cafés, bakeries, clinics, and gear shops. But luxuries are scarce.
MLN Manang is something different. Even at the tail end of the winter off-season, the lodge draws a trickle of walk-in guests, including three older Germans unimpressed by the state of their guesthouse in town. Later, a young Balinese couple swaddled in parkas and woolen beanies walks through the gates, rapturous at the discovery after a long day’s trek.
For those making their way up the road past Bhraka, the new lodge is hard to miss: clad in gray stone, the three-story block sits atop a low, gravelly bluff, stout as a medieval stronghold. Inside, the austerity softens. Overlooking a flagstone courtyard, its rooms—some with balconies or terraces—are simply furnished but cozy, with seating nooks, pine floors, and piping-hot showers. Better still are their postcard-shaming views across the silvery ribbon of the Marshyangdi River to the flanks of Annapurna III, the third-highest peak in the Annapurna range.

The hub of the property is the slate-floored Great Room, where meals and drinks are served. It’s a fitting name. Suffused with natural light pouring through an all-glass frontage, the lofty space nods to the valley’s Tibetan-Buddhist heritage with rows of white Buddha figures set in recessed wall niches—I count 72—rising to a hand-painted ceiling mandala. Days here begin with frothy cappuccinos and hearty breakfast spreads; later meals bring thukpa noodle soup, pan-fried Himalayan trout, and thali platters laden with curried chicken, tangy pickles, dhal, and crispy papadam.
Getting here, admittedly, is a test of commitment, even for non-trekkers. Those unwilling to spring for a chopper ride face a 10-hour drive from Kathmandu to MLN Manang’s sister lodge in Chame, farther down the valley, where they can overnight before pushing on to Bhraka, two more bumpy hours up the road. But the rewards justify the schlep.
“Manang is one of those rare Himalayan valleys with a good diversity of cultural sites and trekking opportunities,” Friedman enthuses on an acclimatization hike up to Praken Gompa, a cliffside monastery tended by a resident nun. “And there are few other places where you can be in a deep, beautiful valley surrounded by 7,000-meter-plus peaks. It’s like Jackson Hole, Wyoming, just a lot more grand.”
With MLN Manang as their base camp, guests have numerous guided excursions to choose from, be it a demanding 1,100-meter ascent to the remote glacial lake of Kicho Tal or a more moderate trek to a sacred cave where the 11th-century Tibetan saint Milarepa is said to have meditated.
One morning begins with a 4&#215;4 drive across the river to a small aquamarine lake, where we set off on foot for the lower base camp of Annapurna IV. Our route follows a glacial stream past stone yak huts and through stands of spruce, eventually emerging above the tree line into a moraine-strewn basin beneath the mountain’s looming walls of rock and ice. When we stop for a thermos of ginger tea, Namgyal entertains us with stories of banjhakri, shamanic forest spirits said to kidnap children and torment those who stray too far into the woods. Easy enough to dismiss as folklore, but in this solitary wilderness, it sticks with me.
I’ll also treasure our visit to Bhraka’s 15th-century Sangag Samling Monastery, built into a cliff above the village’s ancient farming terraces. We wade through a herd of goats and climb a set of 200 steps, only to find the place deserted at this time of year, save for a lay caretaker who gamely unlocks the ocher-walled prayer hall. Beyond a pair of enormous yak-skin prayer wheels, we enter a dimly lit chamber of creaking floorboards and time-burnished timbers, its walls filled with thangka paintings, sacred texts, and other accoutrements of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Following Namgyal’s lead, I make a candle offering to the gods of this extraordinary valley.
It’s nearing dusk by the time we head back to the lodge. Above us among the clouds, the icy peaks of the Annapurna massif are tinged with alpenglow. Up and up they rise, impossibly high, yet they feel close enough to touch.
