An easy high-speed train ride from Tokyo, Japan’s Tohoku region offers a serene journey through samurai history, from a mountain temple to ornate mausoleums and pine-clad islets.

About three-quarters up the mountain trail to the temple of Yamadera, I noticed a bright red postbox. Every weekday, mail carriers from Japan Post climb more than 1,000 steps for the 11 a.m. pickup, my guide informed me. That’s because a community of monks still lives here, as they have for centuries, and there are no access roads. Yamadera is a perfectly preserved Buddhist sanctuary and one of many outstanding remnants of the samurai age in the Tohoku region of northern Japan.

The carriers are used to the view, but it was my first time visiting Yamadera. It’s a deeply tranquil, otherworldly place I first learned about 25 years ago while reading The Narrow Road to the Deep North, a travelogue by the haiku master Matsuo Basho. I was finally retracing Basho’s steps, past towering cedars and limestone cliffs, up the mountain to the spot where he composed his famous verse in 1689:

Such stillness—
sinking into the rocks
the cries of cicadas

One doesn’t have to be a fan of haiku or Buddhism to appreciate Yamadera, with its great moss-covered boulders and 14th-century Main Hall, Japan’s oldest beechwood structure. It’s a unique window into Japan’s past, when beautiful mountain hermitages were patronized by great warlords and everyday pilgrims alike.

The 1,1015 steps to the upper sanctuary of Okunoin are a relatively easy climb, with plenty of spots to rest along the way. At the rock of Midahora, for instance, I took a moment to try to see the image of the Amida Buddha—those who do are said to be blessed with good luck. There are Buddhist statues and monuments along the path, including a stone tablet commemorating the above haiku, and plenty of photogenic nooks. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views over the Tachiya River valley.

Yamadera is in Yamagata Prefecture, a part of the country that sees relatively few visitors from abroad. In fact, fewer than five percent of inbound travelers go to the northern Tohoku region, with the vast majority shuttling between Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. Those who venture north can explore destinations with a rich, authentic heritage from Japan’s samurai age.

The city of Sendai in neighboring Miyagi Prefecture is a gateway to the region. It combines heritage sites such as temples and castles with culinary delights and a lively nightlife. It was founded in the early 17th century by the formidable warlord Date Masamune (1567–1636), a man known as the One-Eyed Dragon, whose vision shaped the city’s culture and status as a regional hub. Before Japan entered a period of self-imposed isolation that lasted centuries, Masamune funded an ambitious mission to Rome and sent a letter to Pope Paul V. Though much of Sendai was rebuilt after World War II destruction, Masamune’s statue in the ruins of Sendai Castle still overlooks the city and his legacy casts a long shadow.

A short train or car ride east from central Sendai brings travelers to Matsushima Bay, a spot long celebrated as one of Japan’s three great views; one famous haiku misattributed to Basho is so enraptured with the bay that it repeatedly exclaims “Matsushima!” More than two hundred pine-clad islets dot the tranquil bay, their silhouettes changing with the shifting light.

Overlooking the bay is Zuigan-ji, a Rinzai Zen temple founded in the early ninth century and expanded under Masamune. A National Treasure, it was spared destruction by the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the region in 2011. Zuigan-ji’s main hall, with its gold leaf panels and stunning paintings of pine trees, flowers, and golden clouds, exudes the opulent characteristic of the Momoyama period in the late 16th century. The main object of devotion here is a statue of Kannon, a bodhisattva regarded as a Buddhist goddess of compassion, but in a nearby room there is a life-sized statue of Masamune himself in full samurai armor including a helmet adorned with an enormous crescent moon—according to his wishes, the statue has both eyes intact. Zuigan-ji also contains a grim reminder of the value that samurai placed upon loyalty and service to their lord: The Rakan no Ma room houses memorials to the 20 samurai who killed themselves when Masamune died, and 16 who ended their lives when his son Tadamune (1600–1685) passed away. The temple’s immaculately raked rock garden of gravel, moss and stones is not to be missed.

Back in Sendai, Masamune’s resting place offers another window onto his fiefdom. Zuihoden, his mausoleum, sits on a wooded hill in the western part of the city. The approach is lined with towering cedars and has the solemn feel of an ancient pilgrimage route. The original structures, completed in 1637, were destroyed during World War II, but were meticulously reconstructed in 1979 using traditional techniques—evidence of Masamune’s lasting importance in Sendai. The result is a stunning example of Momoyama-era artistry with intricate carvings and vibrant lacquers of red, green, and gold. Dragons coil across the beams, and phoenixes spread their wings above the gates—symbols of protection and immortality. Nearby are the mausoleums of his descendants, each slightly less elaborate. Together they form a family necropolis that feels as much a work of art as a site of remembrance.

The ornate architecture of Zuihoden draws comparisons to the mausoleum of Toshogu in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, where Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543–1616), founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, is enshrined. Both are expressions of the same aesthetic language that defined the early Edo period: bright colors, elaborate woodwork, and the marriage of Chinese motifs with Japanese restraint. Zuihoden, smaller and less crowded, has a more intimate atmosphere. Where Nikko dazzles, Sendai’s mausoleum invites reflection. Masamune was a warlord of great ambition who balanced loyalty to the shogunate with his own independent spirit, and his mausoleum mirrors that legacy.

No journey through Sendai would be complete without sampling its culinary culture. The adjacent coastal city of Shiogama is known as Sushi City because it has the highest number of sushi restaurants per capita in Japan. One reason for this is that the Oyashio and Kuroshio Pacific Ocean currents meet offshore, bringing a bounty of plankton and a great diversity of marine life such as sea urchin (uni) and abalone (awabi); the Shiogama Fish Market is the nation’s top supplier of fresh, unfrozen tuna.

Kameki Sushi is a popular sushi spot across the port from the fish market that has been in business for over 80 years. Staff here visit the market daily to select the freshest ingredients to be expertly prepared by veteran chefs. The counter gleams with local catches such as sea bream, flounder, and scallops, which are served on local pottery for an exquisite experience—the way sushi should be enjoyed. The omakase course here starts at 6,930 yen (USD$45.58) per person and is truly unforgettable.

Back in Sendai after dark, the city’s nightlife thrives in narrow alleys known as yokocho—labyrinths of lantern-lit bars and tiny eateries. Iroha Yokacho and Bunka Yokacho are among the most popular, their old-world facades recalling postwar Japan yet welcoming a new generation of travelers.

Ishikawa, for instance, serves up yakitori favorites including tsukune (chicken meatball) skewers dipped in raw egg, either at the counter or an intimate upstairs room where patrons sit on the floor, as glasses of beer and sake clink while laughter spills into the street. At the unpretentious Rock ‘n Roll Museum Sakaba nearby, you can snack on gyoza dumplings and knock back old-school Hoppy, a carbonated, beery low-alcohol drink often mixed with shochu, while listening to rock classics by Cyndi Lauper, the owner’s favorite artist and occasional drinking buddy.

Tohoku today honors its samurai-era heritage without being bound by it. Whether gazing over the islands of Matsushima, tracing the cedar-lined paths to Zuigan-ji or Yamadera, or sipping sake in a lantern-lit alley, visitors find that the spirit of Masamune still lingers: bold and unbowed by time. Don’t forget to raise a glass to the One-Eyed Dragon.
