Now reimagined as an escape for luxury travelers, this heritage-listed former lockup offers a closer look at a less-explored aspect of Japanese history.

Avoiding prison is such an obvious life goal it doesn’t bear mentioning. Even if you’ve never actually visited one, they hardly spring to mind as places to go when you’re seeking relaxation.

So, it raised some eyebrows when Japan’s Hoshino Resorts announced it would be taking over a former prison in Nara—an former capital home to some of the country’s oldest and most magnificent Buddhist temples—and turning it into a 48-room luxury retreat. Judging by the buzz it’s generated since opening in June, those eyebrows are now raised in curiosity. Can a prison stay be luxurious? I checked in to find out.

Nara Prison first opened in 1908 on the northern edge of town. Built in a Western style featuring red-brick facades and graceful Romanesque and Gothic accents, its buildings—now collectively registered as an Important Cultural Property—were an early cornerstone of Japan’s modern correctional system. In 1946, the complex became a juvenile facility serving as the country’s primary comprehensive training and rehabilitation institution for male inmates in their late teens through mid-twenties.

After more than a century in operation, the aging prison closed in 2017 and was subsequently selected for redevelopment as a hotel. Architect and designer Rie Azuma handled the refit, preserving as much as possible while shifting the function from incarceration to hospitality.

“I was deeply impressed by the inherent extraordinary and otherworldly quality of the space, noting that despite being built for confinement, it possessed a profound architectural beauty that felt almost like a ruin,” Azuma told me. “I enjoyed the creative challenge of emphasizing this existing spatial beauty to craft a comfortable environment where modern guests can sense how Meiji-era Japanese society first embraced and interpreted unknown Western culture.”

While they don’t shake an unfortunate if unsurprising institutional feel, the spaces inside Hoshinoya Nara Prison do exude a melancholy beauty. Five cellblocks radiate from a central guard station, where skylights cast diffuse sunlight over whitewashed iron railings and exposed tie bars. Four of these former blocks now house guest rooms, while one has been preserved in situ as part of a museum.

Each room combines nine to 11 of the original cells. The long, narrow chambers, with their small, high windows and low doors, don’t feel particularly spacious, but they are comfortable, kitted out with plush furniture for loafing and a modern bathroom with a deep-set tub. The luxe touches are in the amenities, including lavender face masks, hinoki bath sachets, complimentary wine and spirits, nubbly hand-knitted socks for chilly feet, and a hi-fi system that spins CDs like an old-school record player.

Nods to the past define the experience. An airy lounge and library space, once the chapel, hosts activities from afternoon tea to fragrance-blending workshops. Both black tea and perfume were new imports in the late nineteenth century. Another lounge near the dining area offers digestifs each night to the textured soundtrack of a hand-cranked gramophone.

The period influences are most noticeable in the food, served in spartan private rooms in a former administrative building. The usual Western and Japanese breakfast sets are joined by a third gut-busting option called a Meiji breakfast. It features the fried dishes popularized by the Meiji era’s influx of Western influences, including Scotch eggs, fried prawns, and crab croquettes. The dinner menu embodies the increased beef consumption of that time with dishes like wagyu shabu-shabu and Hamburg steak.

Meanwhile, the signature Gastronomy Chronicle course is a playful exploration of French culinary influences that includes a functional candle concealing foie gras, a terracotta pot of vegetables you can pluck from edible “dirt,” a brick of red salt smashed open at the table to reveal a tender wagyu fillet, and a breaded sole in sauce Albert—not the horseradish-y British one but a reduction of mushrooms, shallots, and Noilly Prat named after the head waiter of legendary Paris restaurant Maxim’s. It’s a little gimmicky, but it’s fun.

The tone in the hotel proper is light, but the facility’s complicated past is addressed in the attached museum. In-house guests can visit for free without a reservation. The dual-language displays cover the architectural history and cultural context of the prison, showing the leap in human rights it represented to go from punitive outdoor “cricket cage” enclosures and summary executions to rehabilitation-focused detention.

In a second section that addresses life in prison, I was moved by a collection of art produced by or in collaboration with incarcerated people. The centerpiece is a towering white drape by Yoshinari Nishio embroidered by former inmates. Their poems and thoughts, rendered in inexpert stitches, are split into panels the size of bricks and reconstituted into a heartrending nonsense like “all I can do is pray,” “save myself,” and “my father, however.” Subjects orphaned from predicates, the fragments embody the emotional extremes and frustrated stabs at communication of adolescence, which I can only imagine are multiplied by the trauma of incarceration. Afterward, it’s a discordant shock to walk out into the sun and back to my room.

More retreat than tourist hotel, Hoshinoya Nara Prison is organized around guests staying in. The location is well north of town and the gates are locked most of the day, requiring a passcode to enter. It’s not the best option for first-timers who want to do a lot of sightseeing. Although not a hot spring resort like Hoshinoya’s flagship property in the mountains of Karuizawa, it has the same goal: an escape from the everyday.

“We wanted to create a place for self-reflection, for turning inward to think,” says PR rep Yukimi Ogi. There’s no spa or pool, no buzzy bar or state-of-the-art fitness center. Just space and time— far more valuable resources. As a matter of fact, my most pleasurable moments were spent solo: flipping through an architecture book as late afternoon sunlight drifted across the pages, drifting off in the bath after a long day, watching the stars emerge in the courtyard garden.

I imagine the same moments would have filled the prison’s former residents with a yearning for the freedom beyond its walls, a wrenching desire to be anywhere else. And now, we guests, in a weird inversion, actively choose the same walls, needing them just to slow down and root ourselves in the present for an hour or two. I can only wonder what that says about our relative sanity.
