From the Singapore-based Sarnies stable (who have steadily taken over Bangkok’s brunch scene with a slew of cafe openings) comes <a href="https://www.instagram.com/fnkytown.bar/?hl=en?destinasian">Funkytown</a>, a fun-filled cocktail spot on the top floors of a townhouse in the central Phrom Phong district. Furnished with jade-hued tile work, orange pleather seating and retro-tinged light fixtures, the vibe is blast-from-the-past, which is only further amplified with a DJ booth pumping 80s disco beats.
The drinks are anything but old-fashioned, though. Concocted by head bartender Pae Ketumarn (who earned his chops at Tokyo’s The SG Club and Sober Company in Shanghai), they riff on familiar but unexpected flavors such as foie gras and Caesar salad. Each drink comes with a “funkiness” rating, ranging from the level 1–rated Melon Cream Soda from Roku gin, Campari, and melon sorbet to the daringly innovative level 5–rated Som Tum with chili tincture, fish sauce caramel, and honeyed wine. An extensive and equally funky snack menu, including crab empanadas with XO sauce and corn dogs from sai oua (spicy northern Thai sausage) help turn it into an all-night hangout. —Chris Schalkx
