Why stay?

The resort-like grounds of The Sukhothai Bangkok are an unexpected oasis of calm amid the Thai capital’s fervent hustle and bustle. This understated five-star hotel has been a fixture on Bangkok’s luxe hospitality scene for more than three decades, evolving without straying from its original DNA and strong sense of place. Sympathetic refurbs and expansions over the years were all done in deference to the timeless interiors and courtyards envisioned by the legendary Ed Tuttle; the latest addition is a standalone destination spa.

The neighborhood

Set back from the south side of busy Sathorn Road, The Sukhothai Bangkok puts guests squarely in the heart of town. Its immediate surroundings are a mix of office blocks, five-star hotels, and low-rise diplomatic missions; the leafy grounds of the Austrian and Danish embassies abut the property. Crossing Sathorn Road and walking for a few hundred meters will bring you to The Commons Saladaeng, an indoor-outdoor complex where a changing roster of events complement the lineup of small-scale food and drinks vendors and a highball-focused Japanese bar. Lumphini MRT station is about a 10-minute stroll down the avenue.

The feel

An air of relaxed sophistication prevails across the more than two-hectare urban resort, whose tallest building is nine stories high. In the main lobby, you’ll encounter a mix of holidaymakers in casual wear and suited-up businessmen passing through. The Sukhothai is a delight to explore: it features a gorgeous garden courtyard as well as a reflecting pool centered on a row of red-brick chedi (stupas). Indoors, Tuttle sought to express the hotel’s Thai identity through five elements—golden teakwood, Jim Thompson silk, mirrors, polished granite, and water. Almost 400 art pieces, including intricate mandala-like lotus carvings and replicas of ancient Khmer-style temple reliefs, have been scattered throughout.

Guest quarters

Refurbished rooms in the main wing have a timeless appeal, being modern yet firmly rooted in the past. Wood trim and relief panels pop on a canvas of whitewashed walls, as do soft furnishings in gray and light caramel hues. The black-stone bathrooms come stocked with lemongrass-and-mandarin scented products from local luxe wellness brand Pañpuri. Soft, fluffy pillows will help you fall asleep in no time; wooden sliding screens are effective at keeping out the early morning daylight. The purpose-built Club Wing, which opened in 2018 with a Club Lounge spanning the sixth floor, contains just 33 guest rooms and suites in a sleek residential style.

Food and drink

Celadon, The Sukothai’s signature Thai restaurant, takes up an ensemble of shingle-roofed pavilions beside a lotus pond facing the lobby. Be sure to order the heavenly crabmeat omelet, succulent grilled pork with galangal-chili paste, and coral grouper fillets in Southern-style yellow curry with slices of toddy palm fruit. The main wing houses a trio of F&B outlets. Colonnade, open only for breakfast and Sunday brunch, does a satisfying global spread that reflects the hotel’s diverse clientele: think Western favorites, pork gyoza, aloo parathi, and mutabbal, plus a changing selection of Thai dishes. The Zuk Bar next door is the spot for after-dinner cocktails, while cozy café Thimian offers healthier bites (be it poke bowls or gourmet sandwiches). Over in the Club Wing, La Scala serves Italian and French-Mediterranean cuisine; three-course lunches here include an antipasti buffet, which includes salads, charcuterie, and cheeses ranging from fontina to bleu d’Auvergne.

Wellness factor

Opened in mid-2024, The Sukhothai Spa sprouts from the hotel gardens like a self-contained village, albeit one with a grand whitewashed gateway and reflecting pools. This impressive 3,000-square-meter facility incorporates traditional Thai houses, each one converted into an upstairs treatment room. The ground floor has hammams, a breezy yoga space, and Thailand’s sole Bastien Gonzalez mani-pedi studio. Therapies use massage oil from sustainable local brand Moringa Project, while the hotel partners with Biologique Recherche for facials. (Desk-bound workers can look to the 90-minute Sukhothai Signature Treatment to relax the whole body and relieve a stiff upper back.) The nearby Club Wing is home to a sprawling double-height gym, complete with a Jacuzzi as well as sauna and steam facilities in the locker rooms.

Family matters

The Sukhothai Bangkok may be geared toward adults (there is no dedicated kids’ club), but families with teens or younger children are welcome. A babysitting service is offered on request and there are a number of connecting rooms. At Thimian, parents can buy a miniature plaster khon dance mask to paint with the kids as a distinctly Thai souvenir.

Sustainability cred

Glass bottles for drinking water and biodegradable coffee pods are standard in guest accommodations; kitchens substitute beeswax for plastic wrap while housekeeping uses only bio-safe cleaning products. The Sukhothai has also retrofitted all its conventional light sources with LED lightbulbs, cutting energy consumption by nearly 80 percent.

What else?

Thimian doubles as a shop offering hand-selected Thai products. Look out for artisanal candles by Maison Miko in exquisitely carved containers made by potters in Ko Ket, handwoven scarves from silk brand Chayanna, and Saro organic lotus tea in flavors like roselle and lemongrass (the exclusive Sukhothai Tea turns the hotel brand’s signature green hue when the hot water it’s steeped in reaches a certain temperature). Also on display are homemade jams and branded merchandise, be it wines, tote bags, or yukata bathrobes.
