The mossy, old-world Campuhan Bridge traverses an idyllic fern-filled valley in the heart of Ubud, and there’s no better place to appreciate this magical view than at <a href="https://www.instagram.com/thelair.ubud/?hl=en?destinasian">The Lair</a>, which sits on a steep slope just below bridge level. Access to this secretive little venue is from the street-level <a href="https://www.instagram.com/arcadia.ubud/?hl=en?destinasian">Arcadia</a> restaurant, down through a whitewashed cave to an open-sided space where yellow lamps, mosaic floor tiles, and cushioned sofas beckon. For sundowners, the money seats are a line of greenery-facing red velvet armchairs.
To the screech of cicadas, guests are given a little bowl of crisps to nibble on while they ponder menus in the form of decks of cards. For drinks, draw a ‘queen’ if you fancy a Naked and Famous cocktail made from bourbon whiskey, Aperol, and locally crafted snake fruit liqueur. (The two-for-one cocktail list at happy hour includes a rum-infused Purple Lair with butterfly pea flowers, bitters, and Pisco sour–ish egg whites.) Feeling peckish? The lineup of bar bites is presented in a similar fashion: hand over the ‘10’ card for braised meatballs topped with mozzarella, basil oil, and gremolata, or the ‘queen’ for pancakes with shredded spiced duck leg, cucumber, leek, and hoisin. —Penny Watson
