Directly above the restaurant Luma—and accessed from street level via a fire escape door—the sophomore bar by mixologist Yutaka Nakashima is a cozy, moodily lit hideout for inventive drinks and good conversations. Cocktail connoisseurs regard his first Indonesian venture, Koda, as one of the best speakeasies in Jakarta; Nakashima’s Bali offshoot puts island-made liquors front and center in the precisely made tipples. Purpure, for instance, is a fruity concoction of lavender-infused Balinese Grappa, raspberry, citrus, and egg white. Other drinks incorporate arak (the local moonshine) flavored with tropical ingredients like pineapple and pandan. True to its name, Surprise Me! combines brem rice wine, dark rum, and azuki beans for an unexpected balance of depth, sweetness, and intensity. (Matcha powder on the rim and a gold-leaf garnish impart an extra Japanese touch.) Strike up a conversation with the bartenders as you sink into one of the plush armchairs lining the leather-edged counter, and, if you’re feeling adventurous, ask them to make a one-off creation to suit your mood. —James Louie
