The plantation-bungalow aesthetic of this Sri Lankan restaurant pairs nicely with its tropical surroundings. <a href="https://galleclubbali.com/?destinasian">Galle Club</a> is located on a coveted corner of Nyuh Kuning, a prized residential area in Ubud known for its strollable streets, coffee shops, boutiques, and buzzy dining scene.
Inspired by tales of the Indonesian spice trail, owner Shrey Gaurishankar has added coastal flavors from his native India to the menu, and ensured all necessary spices can be sourced fresh locally. It’s a recipe for success. Thalis, tiffins, and hopper bowls are offered at lunchtime, with kothu roti—a sliced bun parotta in traditional salna curry—fast becoming a local favorite. For dinner, a spread might include decadent hot butter halloumi with Bombay shallots, succulent slow-cooked lamb shank with Jaffna marinade, grilled cabbage with fried shallots and chili oil, and a Sri Lankan red lentil dal.
In the dining room, whitewashed columns, exposed ceiling beams and big tropical indoor plants add to the old-world charm. At tables and chairs strung along the balcony, guests can take in the street scene while sipping on expertly made cocktails. Puli, a smooth mix of scotch, cold-pressed tamarind and ginger tincture, is a good starting point; so too the sadikka, whose refreshing prosecco base comes pimped with nutmeg liqueur and orange bitters.
