One of the signature dishes at Motel Mexicola Canggu.

Margaritas and cervezas are a must-order at Motel Mexicola.

Diners at Motel Mexicola Canggu can graze on well-executed Mexican classics like guacamole and tacos.

Meters from the beach on Canggu’s lively Batu Bolong strip, Motel Mexicola’s second outpost is even better than the Seminyak original. The 180-seat sibling restaurant is all about good times matched with awesome food from a menu that riffs off its beachside locale by channeling Mexico’s southwest and the Yucatán Peninsula. Aided by a hand-built eight-meter-high pibil, or traditional fire pit, executive chef Steven Skelly and his team roast, dry, smoke, and grill whole fish, slabs of meat, and a rainbow of vegetables. Classics like guacamole, quesadilla, ceviche, and ensalada live on but the “from the pib” options shine: tacos with braised beef cheek and bone marrow salsa; tostados with braised lamb, spicy herb salad, agave, and onion. Ingest it all in a setting that marries Bali’s alang-alang rooftops and South America’s sassy tiles, terra-cotta, and candlelit shrines. Micheladas, margaritas, and mezcal tipples are essential accompaniments, obvs. —Penny Watson
