If you take home one meaningful souvenir from Bali, let it be from Threads of Life. This well-respected local business has championed Indonesia’s incredible textile traditions since 1998, and works closely with 1,200 female artisans across 12 of the nation’s major islands. At its red brick–fronted gallery and boutique on Jalan Raya Lungsiakan, fabrics in muted shades of navy, maroon, and black are stretched on bamboo frames to showcase the exquisite weaving styles of different islands and the motifs and symbols that represent them. Ikat from Sumba, for example, have a “warped” design with motifs including ruha (deer) and habak (flower) that appear distinctively blurred. This priceless woven heritage is expressed in craft accessories such as silk scarves, colorful earrings, shirts, and bags, alongside practical household items including table runners and cupai—baskets used as carriers by the Dayak Desa and Iban Dayak of West Kalimantan province. —Penny Watson
