Third in a planned foursome of late-night speakeasies-cum-danceterias, Seminyak’s The Shady Flamingo joined its popular elder counterparts in Berawa (The Shady Pig) and Pererenan (The Shady Fox) in mid-2022. Its inspiration is an imaginary 1940s Los Angeles gangster’s moll, whose portrait adorns the living room behind the marquetry DJ desk. Art deco mirrors, a giant stained-glass flamingo, overstuffed velvet sofas, and a flickering faux fire combine for an effect that’s just the right side of kitsch. The cocktail menu, which changes regularly, is less overtly ambitious than at The Shady Fox—although the team use the equipment there to craft their own chocolate distillate. From a barrel-aged Old Fashioned to No Country for Old Men, which arrives in a bell jar full of smoke, and the accessible, pink, and floral Flamingo, which comes with a hot pink flamingo on the foam head, the drinks are on point.
