Contemporary Chinese luxury pays tribute to the past at this jewel box of a flagship boutique.

From its origins as a modest shop in Guangzhou in 1929, Chow Tai Fook has grown into one of the world’s largest jewelry retailers, with more than 5,000 stores worldwide. Now, the <a href="https://destinasian.com/travel-guide/hong-kong" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hong Kong</a>–based company is rethinking the retail experience with the recent launch of its first global flagship, the <a href="https://www.chowtaifook.com/en-hk?DestinAsian" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Home of Chow Tai Fook</a>.
With a prime location on Kowloon’s bustling Canton Road, the 930-square meter showroom makes a dramatic first impression with the Heritage Pavilion, an entry gallery that traces the brand’s evolution through memorabilia and gold objets d’art showcasing traditional techniques such as filigree and toreutics. Its centerpiece is Chow Tai Fook’s most ambitious work yet: Gold Ginkgo Tree, a 2.1-meter-tall installation that shimmers with more than 3,500 leaves of pure gold, handcrafted by 50 artisans over 60,000 hours.
Beyond the Heritage Pavilion, interconnected spaces defined by natural timber, earthy tones, and warm lighting are each dedicated to a signature collection. Rouge, for instance, weaves the stylized Chinese character fu (“good fortune”) into intricate necklaces and rings and, through a collaboration with French porcelain house Bernardaud, geometric patterns on fine china. Other creations from the new Chow Tai Fook Home collection include gilded chopstick rests and fruit bowls with the scalloped forms of ginkgo leaves, a symbol of longevity. That emphasis on heritage motifs and ancient symbolism is proof that some things never go out of fashion.
